The part nobody prepares you for: the psychology of losing 40 kg
Food stops being a coping tool overnight. Relationships shift. Body image lags behind the mirror by a year or more.
The coping mechanism disappears
For many patients food managed stress for decades. After surgery that option is physically removed, and whatever it was managing is still there. Recognising this in advance is protective; discovering it at month four is not.
Transfer addiction is real
A minority of patients develop new dependencies, most commonly alcohol, absorbed faster and tolerated less after bypass. Screening and honest conversation before surgery reduces this risk substantially.
Relationships change
Attention from strangers, changed dynamics with a partner, and comments from family are all common and rarely anticipated. Some relationships strengthen; some do not survive the change in the person they formed around.
Body image lags
Patients frequently describe still 'feeling' their old size a year later, or being distressed by loose skin they had not pictured. Psychological support is part of good bariatric care, not a sign that something has gone wrong.
The Ones People Actually Ask.
Do you offer psychological support?
We include pre-operative screening and can arrange counselling. We also decline surgery where an untreated eating disorder is identified. That is a clinical duty, not a rejection.
