Gastric balloon removal: when it comes out and what follows

At six or twelve months depending on the model, and the date is not negotiable. Removal is a fifteen-minute endoscopy; the month after it decides your result.

Six months or twelve — the date is fixed

A gastric balloon comes out at six or twelve months depending on the model, and that date is not negotiable. The shell degrades slowly in stomach acid; leaving it beyond its rated life risks deflation and, rarely, obstruction as the collapsed device moves into the intestine. Removal is not something to postpone because the weight loss is still going well. We book it at the same time as the placement, before you fly home.

What removal actually involves

It is the same endoscopy as the placement, run in reverse, under light sedation and taking around fifteen minutes. The balloon is punctured, the saline drained out through the catheter, and the deflated shell withdrawn through the mouth. You are awake within the hour, drinking the same afternoon and cleared to fly the next day. There is no incision at any stage, which is precisely why a balloon suits people who will not have surgery.

The month after: appetite comes back

Expect real hunger to return within two to four weeks, and expect it to feel dramatic after months of barely thinking about food. This is the point at which results are kept or lost. The habits built while the balloon was in — protein first, measured portions, eating slowly — are the only thing still doing the work, so we front-load the dietitian sessions into the weeks either side of removal rather than the weeks after placement.

What we tell people about a second balloon

A repeat balloon is possible after a short gap and we do place them. But we are honest that a second balloon in someone who regained everything from the first is usually treating the wrong problem. At €2,800 per balloon against €3,800 for a sleeve, two balloons cost more than the operation and give a fraction of the durability. If your BMI qualifies you for surgery, we will say so rather than sell the easier product.

Frequently asked questions

Gastric balloon removal: when it comes out and what follows

Yes, and a small number of patients do, usually within the first two weeks. Early removal is the same fifteen-minute endoscopy. We would far rather take it out than have you spend six months miserable, and we tell people that before they decide to go ahead.

It depends almost entirely on whether the follow-up was used. Patients who complete the dietitian programme generally hold most of what they lost; those who stopped answering after removal typically regain a substantial share within a year. We will not quote a single number, because it would be dishonest.
