No. There is no expiry date on a modern implant, and replacing an intact, comfortable one on a calendar exposes you to surgery for no measurable gain.
Modern implants do not carry an expiry date, and there is no reason to replace one that is intact and comfortable simply because ten years have passed. What is true is that the risk of rupture, capsular contracture and shape change rises slowly with time, so the honest framing is a device with an unknown but finite service life rather than a fixed one. Many women keep the same implants for fifteen or twenty years without a single problem.
A saline implant deflates visibly within days, so you know. A silicone rupture is usually silent, because modern cohesive gel holds its shape inside the capsule and nothing changes on the outside — which is why it is called a silent rupture and why imaging exists. Signs worth reporting are a change in shape, a new firmness, an area of tenderness or a lump at the edge. None of them are emergencies, but all of them deserve a scan.
Ultrasound is the practical first-line scan and it is quick, cheap and available anywhere; MRI is the more sensitive test when ultrasound is unclear. A reasonable pattern is a clinical check at one year, then imaging every two to three years from around year five, brought forward if anything changes. Keep the implant card you are given after surgery: it records the manufacturer, volume, batch and date, and any surgeon anywhere in the world will ask for it.
If an implant does need changing, the second operation is usually simpler than the first because the pocket already exists, and it starts from the same €3,500 for breast aesthetics unless the capsule has to be removed as well. What we do not recommend is elective replacement on a calendar. Operating on a woman with intact, comfortable implants to pre-empt a problem she does not have exposes her to anaesthesia and scarring for no measurable gain.
You usually cannot tell by looking or feeling, which is the point of the name silent rupture. Ultrasound picks up most cases and MRI is the more sensitive test. That is the argument for periodic imaging rather than for pre-emptive surgery.
The implant does not change, but the breast tissue around it does, so a large weight change can alter the shape and how well the implant is covered. That is a reason for a review appointment, not automatically for a new implant.
