Translucency, not the brand name on the block, decides whether a crown reads as a tooth or as a tile — and the stump underneath changes the answer.
Translucency decides it: how much light passes through the crown instead of bouncing off its surface. Natural enamel transmits a substantial share of the light that hits it, which is why real teeth glow faintly at the biting edge and look denser near the gum. Early opaque zirconia blocked nearly all of that light and read as a flat white tile. Modern multi-layer blocks are manufactured with graded translucency, more see-through at the incisal third and more saturated at the neck, mimicking a real tooth.
Zirconia is sold in grades, and the trade-off between them is real rather than marketing. High-strength material is markedly stronger in flexure but noticeably opaque; high-translucency material looks far better and gives up part of that strength. The honest answer is to use different grades in different places: translucent zirconia on front teeth where light matters, stronger zirconia on molars where bite force matters. A laboratory that mills a whole mouth from one block has chosen convenience over your result.
A translucent crown transmits light in both directions, so a dark stump, an old metal post or a root-canal-darkened root will grey the crown from beneath. This is the most common reason a technically well-made crown still looks wrong in photographs. The decision has to be made before milling: a more opaque core with layered ceramic on the visible face, or an opaque cement. We photograph the prepared stump and send that shade to the laboratory with the impression, because the technician cannot guess it.
Monolithic zirconium is 180 EUR per tooth here, the same figure for a molar or a front tooth, and we do not charge a supplement for the translucent grade. What we will not do is crown an intact tooth purely to change its colour, because the enamel removed for a crown never comes back. If the tooth is sound and the complaint is shade, whitening at 180 EUR or composite bonding is the recommendation, even though it earns us less.
Slightly, yes. A camera flash is a hard, direct light that flattens translucency and exaggerates brightness, so an over-white shade that looked acceptable in the mirror can look artificial in a flash photograph. We check the approved shade under daylight and with a flash before cementing.
Not meaningfully. Surface stains and glaze can adjust the shade a little, but translucency is a property of the block that was milled. If the level is wrong, the crown is remade — which is why the try-in appointment before cementation matters more than any other step.
