Veneers or crowns? A dentist's rule of thumb
If the tooth is healthy, cover as little of it as possible. If it is already damaged, cover all of it. The rest is detail.
What each one actually is
A veneer is a 0.3-0.7 mm ceramic shell bonded to the front of the tooth. A crown wraps the whole tooth. That difference, front only versus full coverage, drives everything else: how much enamel is removed, how long it lasts, and what it can correct.
The healthy-tooth rule
Enamel does not grow back. If your teeth are structurally sound and the problem is colour, small chips or minor crowding, veneers preserve tissue that a crown would remove. Choosing crowns for convenience on healthy teeth is the most common over-treatment in cosmetic dentistry.
When a crown is the right answer
Root-treated teeth, heavily filled teeth, cracked teeth and severe misalignment all need full coverage. A veneer bonded to a weakened tooth transfers stress to a structure that cannot take it.
Cost and lifespan compared
Veneers last 10-15 years, crowns 15-20. The price gap is small enough that the decision should be clinical, not financial.
The Ones People Actually Ask.
Can I have veneers if my teeth are crooked?
Mild crowding yes. Significant misalignment is better corrected with aligners first, moving teeth is healthier than grinding them into a new position.
