Why the navel is rebuilt, not moved

During a tummy tuck the abdominal skin is lifted and pulled down, but the navel stays where it is. It is attached by a stalk to the abdominal wall underneath. The surgeon cuts a new opening in the redraped skin and brings the original navel out through it. So the belly button you end up with is your own, in your own place, framed by a new opening whose shape and size are a deliberate choice.

What a natural navel actually looks like

A convincing navel is small, slightly vertical rather than round, sits a little deeper at the top than at the bottom, and has a faint hood of skin above it. Round, wide, shallow openings read as surgical immediately, and that is what a rushed closure produces. We mark the position against the hip bones rather than by eye, because a navel two centimetres too high is the most visible tummy tuck error there is.

Umbilicoplasty on its own

Not everyone needs an abdominoplasty. Pregnancy, weight change or an old hernia repair can leave a navel that is stretched wide, everted or hooded with loose skin, without any real excess skin on the abdomen itself. That is corrected as a standalone thirty to forty-five minute procedure under local anaesthesia, through incisions inside the rim of the navel, with a week of taped dressings and no time off work beyond the first day.

The scar, and where it hides

Because the incisions sit on the inner rim, the scar lies inside the funnel and is effectively invisible once healed. The complication to watch for is a hypertrophic ring, a raised, tight scar that narrows the opening, which is why we ask you to use silicone gel there for eight weeks. Keep the area dry, and skip swimming pools and the sea for three weeks; a moist navel is a slow-healing navel.
