Beard and scalp in one session: when it works, when it fails
Both procedures draw grafts from the same donor bank. Under 4,000 grafts and a dense donor make one day realistic; beyond that, splitting protects the result.
Both operations spend the same account
Beard grafts are almost always taken from the same occipital donor as scalp grafts, so the two procedures compete for one finite reserve. Fifteen hundred grafts placed in the beard at thirty are fifteen hundred that will not be available for the crown at forty-five. That trade is entirely reasonable if you make it knowingly. It becomes a problem when a clinic sells both without mentioning that the bank is shared.
When one day genuinely works
Combining is sensible when donor density measures above roughly 80 follicular units per square centimetre, the scalp need is modest at under about 2,500 grafts, and the beard need stays under 1,500. A total below 4,000 grafts fits into a single seven to eight hour day without rushing the placement, and placement is exactly where quality is lost when a schedule slips. Beyond that number, we split the plan.
When we split it, and why
A Norwood 5, a measured donor below 70 follicular units per square centimetre, or a combined requirement over 4,000 grafts all mean two sessions rather than one long day. The reverse operation, using beard hair as the donor for the scalp, is a separate strategy for repair cases and depleted donors. Beard hair is thicker and coarser, so it goes to the crown or mid-scalp and never into a frontal hairline.
Cost, and what the recovery is actually like
Scalp FUE is €1,800 and a beard transplant €1,500; combined they are quoted as one plan rather than simply added together. Recovery is harder than either alone. The face swells for three to four days, shaving is off limits for ten to fifteen days, and facial redness stays visible for around two weeks in a place no hat covers. Book the time off for the beard, not the scalp.
The Ones People Actually Ask.
Can I use beard hair to rebuild my hairline?
No. Beard hair is thicker and grows with a different curl, so in a frontal hairline it looks wiry and obvious. It is useful for the crown and mid-scalp, and for adding bulk where finer hair already exists.
Will taking beard grafts leave marks on my face?
Extraction points under the jaw heal to tiny dots that are not visible at conversational distance in most skin types. We harvest from under the jawline rather than the cheeks precisely for that reason.
