LASIK corrects vision by reshaping the cornea, the clear front window of the eye. The surgeon lifts a thin corneal flap, an excimer laser removes a precisely calculated amount of tissue so light focuses on the retina, and the flap is laid back without stitches. The treatment itself takes a few minutes per eye under numbing drops. It is not for everyone: thin corneas, an unstable prescription, keratoconus or dry eye can rule it out, which is why the pre-operative scan decides, not the sales desk.

Only a scan can answer that. We measure corneal thickness, curvature and tear film, and check that your prescription has been stable for at least a year. If the numbers are borderline we will say so, and suggest a lens-based option instead of pushing ahead.
Plan 3–4 days: a full examination on the first day, treatment on the second, and a check-up before you fly. You should not drive yourself on the day of treatment, and a translator is with you at every appointment.
Most patients no longer need glasses for distance. Reading glasses are still likely from your mid-forties onwards, because LASIK reshapes the cornea and does not stop the natural lens stiffening with age.
