A cataract is the gradual clouding of the eye's natural lens, which scatters light and dulls colour and contrast. Surgery removes it: through an incision of around two millimetres, ultrasound breaks the lens into fragments that are gently suctioned away, and a folded intraocular lens is placed inside the original capsule, where it unfolds and stays. It is a day-case procedure under anaesthetic drops, usually one eye at a time, with the second eye treated a few days later.

A monofocal lens gives excellent distance vision with reading glasses; multifocal and toric lenses can reduce that dependence but suit some eyes better than others. Your surgeon recommends a type after measuring the eye and hearing how you actually use your vision.
Plan 4–5 days. The eyes are usually treated on separate days, with a full examination beforehand and a check-up afterwards before you fly home. VIP transfers run between your hotel and the hospital.
