Turkish hammam after surgery: when each procedure is cleared

Forty-five degrees, an abrasive scrub and a pressure massage — here are the waiting periods we give for dental, hair, nose, body and bariatric patients.

What a hammam actually does to your body

The hot room sits at 40 to 45 degrees, and the marble gobek tasi you lie on is hotter still. Your blood vessels dilate, your blood pressure drops, and you lose fluid faster than you notice. The kese scrub is an abrasive mitt worked hard over the whole body, and the foam massage that follows involves real pressure on the back and shoulders. None of that is gentle.

The waiting periods we give, procedure by procedure

After dental implants or extractions, seven to ten days. After a hair transplant, thirty days for the steam room and six months before anyone touches your scalp with a kese. After rhinoplasty, six weeks — heat makes the nose swell and the result is judged over a year. After liposuction, a tummy tuck or a BBL, six weeks and no scrub over the treated area for six months. After bariatric surgery, four weeks, and dehydration is the reason.

Why heat and a fresh wound genuinely do not mix

Three separate mechanisms. Heat dilates vessels, which restarts bleeding in a wound that had settled and worsens swelling that was going down. Sweating and standing up quickly in a 45 degree room drops blood pressure, and fainting on wet marble is how people break noses that were operated on last week. And a shared wet environment is a poor place for an incision that is not yet closed.

How to do it properly once you are cleared

Historic hammams in Sultanahmet charge 45 to 90 euro for the full ritual; neighbourhood ones charge a third of that and feel more like a bath than a show. Most are gender-separated by room or by hour. Tell the attendant where your scars are before you undress, not during — say ameliyat oldum, meaning I have had surgery. Skip the kese entirely on the first visit and drink a litre of water afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Turkish hammam after surgery: when each procedure is cleared

Yes, and most do. Nothing about your recovery restricts them, and the two-hour ritual fills exactly the gap while you are resting at the hotel.

Completely. You can book the bath and the foam wash without it, and after any surgery in the last six months that is what we would tell you to do.
