A single front crown is the most demanding restoration in dentistry, because the eye compares it with the tooth two millimetres away rather than with a memory.
When we design a full smile, every unit is made to the same specification, so the eye has no reference to argue with. A single central incisor has a reference sitting beside it, and the brain compares the two within the first second of looking at your face. It is judging four things at once — brightness, colour saturation, translucency and surface texture — and a match that fails on any one of them reads as a false tooth even when the shape is perfect.
Shade guides capture brightness and hue reasonably well and almost nothing else. Real teeth carry white enamel flecks, faint crack lines, a translucent halo at the biting edge and a horizontal ripple that catches light. These have to be recorded photographically, ideally with a cross-polarised filter that removes surface glare so the internal structure is visible to the technician. We also take the shade in the first minutes of the appointment, because teeth dehydrate and lighten measurably after fifteen minutes with the mouth held open.
A single anterior crown is tried in unglazed, with water rather than cement, in front of a window. If it is wrong it goes back to the laboratory the same day and is corrected while you are still in Istanbul, which is precisely why we schedule single front crowns early in a trip rather than on the last afternoon. Patients who accept the first attempt out of politeness are the ones who go home unhappy, so we ask directly and expect a direct answer.
If the neighbouring tooth is heavily filled, discoloured by an old root canal or already carrying a poor crown, matching a new crown to it means copying a compromised tooth. In those cases making both central incisors as a pair at 180 EUR each usually gives a better and more stable result. When the neighbour is intact and healthy we say so and do the single unit; we do not prepare a sound tooth to make our own job easier.
Whiten first. Ceramic does not respond to whitening agents, so a crown matched to your current shade will look dark against whitened neighbours within a year. We whiten, wait two weeks for the shade to stabilise, then take the shade for the crown.
It goes back and is remade at our cost. That is the entire point of trying it in unglazed rather than cementing it and discussing it afterwards, and it is why the shade appointment is scheduled before the last day of your stay.
