Flying after a hair transplant: cabin pressure and timing

Cabin pressure is not the problem

Flying the day after a hair transplant is safe, and the cabin pressure people worry about has no measurable effect on grafts. A cabin is pressurised to roughly the equivalent of two thousand metres of altitude, a change your scalp does not register. Grafts fail from mechanical trauma, poor blood supply or infection, not from pressure differences. We still schedule most return flights for the second or third day, so the first wash and the check-up happen before you leave.

The three things that actually go wrong on a plane

Reaching up into an overhead locker with a suitcase is the classic way to pull a fresh donor wound open, so travel with a bag that slides under the seat and ask for help with anything heavier. Sleeping against a headrest crushes grafts at the back and sides, which is why we send you with a neck pillow. And cabin air runs at ten to twenty per cent humidity, drying crusts hard, so a saline spray every hour matters.

The practical checklist for the airport

Wear a loose hooded top rather than anything you must pull over your head, and use only the wide surgical hat we provide, from day three onwards. Carry the saline spray in a clear bag under one hundred millilitres. Skip alcohol on board and drink water instead, because alcohol dilates vessels and worsens the swelling that peaks on day three, often in mid-air. Choose an aisle seat so that nobody climbs past your head during the flight.

When we ask you to delay

Two situations change the advice. A flight longer than about eight hours within the first forty-eight means a long stretch of dry air with no easy way to wash, so we would rather you leave on day three. And any sign of infection, meaning spreading redness, fever, discharge, or pain that increases instead of fading, means you come back to us before you board rather than after you land.
