Dental implant recovery: an honest day-by-day timeline
Most patients are surprised by how little pain there is, and by how strict the first 48 hours actually are.
Day 0: the day of surgery
Placement takes 20-40 minutes per implant under local anaesthesia. You will feel pressure, not pain. Ice for 20 minutes on, 20 off, for the first six hours; no rinsing, no spitting, no smoking, no hot drinks. Bleeding that oozes rather than flows is normal.
Days 1-3: swelling peaks
Swelling is at its worst on day two or three, not day one. Painkillers are usually needed for two evenings. Soft, cool food only. Sleep with an extra pillow. If pain suddenly increases on day four instead of decreasing, contact us. That pattern is the one that matters.
Days 4-14: back to normal life
Stitches come out around day 7-10. Most patients are back at desk work in 2-3 days and at the gym in a week. Chewing on the implant side stays off-limits until the crown is fitted.
Months 2-3: integration and the crown
The bone fuses to the implant surface over 8-12 weeks. Only then is the permanent crown made and fitted. Rushing this step is the single most common reason implants fail in the first year.
The Ones People Actually Ask.
How much pain should I expect?
Most patients rate day two at 3-4 out of 10 and take standard painkillers for two evenings. Severe pain is not normal and should be reported.
