Choosing a bariatric clinic abroad: the ICU question
If the facility cannot manage a leak at 3am, nothing else on the brochure matters.
Non-negotiable: ICU on site
Bariatric surgery is major abdominal surgery on patients with higher anaesthetic risk. An intensive care unit in the same building, not 'nearby' or 'affiliated', is the single most important thing to verify.
The surgeon's volume
Ask how many bariatric cases the surgeon performs annually. Outcome data consistently links higher volume to lower complication rates, in every country studied.
The programme, not the operation
Ask what happens at months 1, 3, 6 and 12; who provides dietitian support and in what language; and what bloods are checked and when. A clinic that answers only about the operation is selling a procedure, not treating obesity.
Emergency planning
What happens if there is a complication after you fly home? Which hospital do you go to, who communicates with your local surgeon, and who pays? Get this in writing before booking, wherever you go.
