A mini only works when the excess skin stops below the navel — choose it for a bigger problem and you keep a fold.
The group is smaller than the internet suggests: loose skin confined below the navel, no meaningful excess above it, minimal or low muscle separation, and reasonable skin tone. Typically that is a woman after one pregnancy or a modest weight change who dislikes a small lower shelf. The scar is shorter, the navel is not moved, and most patients are back to desk work in about a week rather than two.
It cannot treat skin above the navel, cannot repair a separation that extends up toward the ribs, and cannot narrow the waist to the same degree. Choosing a mini for a full-length problem produces a flat lower abdomen with a visible fold sitting above it, and that is the most common disappointment we are asked to revise. Revising it means performing the full operation anyway, with the shorter scar already spent.
The full abdominoplasty removes skin from ribs to pubis, repositions the navel through a new opening, and repairs the muscle along its whole length. In exchange you accept a longer scar placed low across the hips, drains in some cases, and ten to fourteen days in Istanbul before flying. We assess you standing and seated, because sitting reveals folds that standing hides. We pinch the skin above the navel to see whether there is excess there, ask you to lift your head to expose any separation, and look at existing scars — a caesarean scar can often be incorporated into the new one. If a mini will not deliver what you asked for, we will tell you, even when a mini is what you came for.
You can ask, but if the excess skin extends above the navel we will decline. Trading a correct result for a shorter scar usually ends in a second operation with both.
Only if your skin still retracts well and the problem is fat rather than laxity. Vaser liposuction at €2,400 removes volume; it does not remove skin, and on a stretched abdominal wall it can make loose skin more obvious.
