The first week after a gastric sleeve, hour by hour

Sipping water is harder than you imagine, and walking is more important than resting.

Day 0: recovery room to walking

You will be on your feet within hours. Pain is managed intravenously, and the first walk is short. Nothing by mouth for the first hours; then ice chips and sips of water.

Days 1–2: the leak test

A swallow study or methylene blue test confirms the staple line is sealed. Once cleared, clear liquids start — 30 ml at a time, every fifteen minutes. Most patients find this harder than expected because the new stomach signals fullness immediately.

Day 3: discharge and hotel

Discharge with medication, a written protocol and your dietitian's contact. You stay in Istanbul two more nights so we can review you before flying, and so any early problem is managed here rather than at home.

Days 4–7: home and vigilance

Persistent tachycardia, fever, severe pain or inability to keep fluids down all warrant immediate contact. Otherwise: sip constantly, walk hourly, expect fatigue, and do not be alarmed by lack of hunger.
