Cross-linking treats the cause: riboflavin drops soak into the cornea and controlled ultraviolet light triggers new bonds between collagen fibres, stiffening the tissue and halting progression in most eyes. It preserves sight rather than restoring it, so it is combined where needed with intracorneal ring segments or hard contact lenses to sharpen what remains. Advanced cases with severe scarring may still need a corneal transplant.

The eye is numbed with drops, so the treatment itself is not painful. The surface is usually sore, watery and light-sensitive for two to three days while it heals, and a bandage lens plus drops are used during that period.
Repeat corneal topography over several months shows whether the cone is steepening. If you have older scans, bring them — comparing them with ours is the clearest way to decide whether treatment is needed now or can wait.
